New And Improved
I just got a new type of newsletter from the USPTO and it is very interesting. It is really the July issue so like everything on PBS and elsewhere, it is celebrating the moon landing but with a twist. For example, there is a story about how Black and Decker’s involvement with developing a long life rechargeable moon drill for NASA became the billion dollar best selling product we all know and love called the Dust Buster.
The success of that product also opened the company’s eyes to the fact that women buy tools that make their lives easier too. Sometimes inventors should consider other markets for the projects they are developing. The newsletter covers some other topics like Camp Invention and new tools for examiners as well. Another good friend of the group, Don Debelak has a great article on an inventors’ meteoric rise to success through Ace Hardware’s open buying day http://bit.ly/2KEgv2i . He also shared the link to the show http://bit.ly/2M5W9C0 This show has a new twist to it in that you donate $300 to the True Value Foundation to meet with a merchant for 30 minutes or $500 to meet for 60 minutes. Not only do you get to pitch your product, the fee is a tax deduction and helps kids.
Just about every invention is a New and Improved version of something else. Those of us old enough to remember life without battery powered screw guns, know that man had been using hand held screw drivers for centuries. Electric drills were known for a long time before somebody with a really sore arm thought, Hey, what if I put the screw driver in my drill and a whole new world opened up. Granted, one with a lot of striped out screw heads but there are always details to work out.
We inventors need to improve ourselves as well as our inventions if we don’t want to be labeled a Schmeckle. What’s a Schmeckle? Come to the meeting this Saturday at Patch Reef Park to find out. What you will learn is how to portray yourself as a true professional and we all need to do this if we want companies to take us seriously.

Now, think about this, it was less than 70 years between the Wright brothers first patent and Niel Armstrong’s Giant Leap For Mankind. Technology is being developed at the speed of light these days. It is not good enough to keep up, we need to be ahead of the curve. It doesn’t always have to be high tech. Think about the screw gun, the paper clip and tons of everyday items that are actually brilliant inventions. We need to keep our minds and eyes open to discover the next New and Improved thing. Take up the challenge!
