Can you imagine creating a game that is so beloved, it is still selling after 40 years?
That is reality for Ken Johnson, the creator of Phase10.
Available in 20 languages and in more than 30 countries, Phase10 is the second most popular card game of all time. Today, it is licensed and produced by Mattel, with worldwide sales of over 4 million games per year.
But that’s not all.
What we find remarkable is that Ken consistently finds creative ways to explore new markets, which keeps his intellectual property fresh and relevant for the next generation. For example, there are multiple versions of the game out now — including Phase 10 ‘Flip’ and Phase 10 ‘Express’ — as well as a popular app.
With more line extensions launching this fall and planned for next year, it is the perfect time to learn the secrets to Ken’s success.
Join your IGA cofounders Stephen Key and Andrew Krauss on Wednesday October 30th at 4pm Pacific for a wide-ranging conversation with Ken Johnson about creativity, intellectual property, the game industry, and licensing!
Please, bring your questions. This event is free — like all IGA events are — and everyone is welcome.
Plus, stick around for small group conversations in Breakout Rooms after.
About Ken Johnson
Ken’s big success came in 1982 when he set out to design a new card game. Upon seeing the success of Uno, he wanted to design a card game that could achieve similar success. After just a couple of days sequestered in his apartment, he came up with the Phase 10 card game. His first customers included K-Mart and Meijer stores.
In 1987 Ken licensed the manufacturing and distribution rights of Phase 10 and began receiving royalties from the worldwide sales. Phase 10 is now licensed and produced by Mattel, the largest toy company in the world, with worldwide sales of over 4 million games per year.
Phase 10 is sold in over 30 countries and is the 2nd best-selling card game in the world. In the summer of 2022, Ken and Mattel celebrated Phase 10’s 40th anniversary with a special edition.
In 2012, Ken was nominated for a TAGIE award — the Oscar of the Toy and Game industry. He has been a guest speaker at inventor clubs, universities, civic organizations and other institutions across the country, and provides support and resources for inventors, entrepreneurs, and youth organizations.
He is the author of The Simple Plan: Six Easy Steps to Make Millions from Your Ideas. Ken lives in Southeast Michigan with his wife and their son.
