Patent Filing Strategies For Individual Inventors & Small Businesses
Alex Hobson, Keynote Speaker
Alex Hobson will present an introduction to patents and describe the variety of different patent filing strategies that may be employed to meet business or personal objectives. Filing strategies to delay costs and examination will be described along with filing strategies to accelerate examination. Also, filing strategies and considerations for international filing will be presented. Attendees will learn about the different types of patent applications available and which type of application and filing strategy is best for your situation.
Mr. Hobson works with clients to decide what type of patent application might be best given their situation and objectives. In some cases, an applicant is still in development and therefore a provisional patent application may be the best option. A provisional application enables additional developments and discoveries to be covered in subsequent provisional applications before submitting a non-provisional application. In other cases, an applicant may want to get an application issued as quickly as possible. There are several options for these clients including a Track 1 petition to accelerate the application through the USPTO and in some cases a petition to accelerate based on age. Other considerations, including foreign filing and the competitive situation for your product will have an impact on the recommended filing strategy.
Alex is founder and president of Invention To Patent Services, www.invention-to-patent.com which offers affordable and quality patent preparation and filing services. Alex is also an inventor, being named on more than 20 issued patents under the assignment of his former employer, W.L. Gore and Associates. He worked with Gore for 20 years and focused initially on product development before becoming a registered patent agent and diving into patent law. For the past 10 years, he has grown Invention to Patent Services and has filed about 1000 patents. He utilizes his background in product development and as an inventor to ensure patent applications include a broad disclosure with alternative embodiments. He understands the best strategies for patent preparation and prosecution and has over an 80% allowance rate.
