UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE
The University of Melbourne is Australia’s leading research university in the world’s most liveable city. Founded in 1853, it is Australia’s second oldest university and the oldest in Victoria. Independent world rankings place the University of Melbourne as number 1 in Australia and among the leading universities internationally––number 32 (Times Higher Education) and number 39 (Academic Ranking of World Universities). Globally, the University is ranked number 6 in education and 8 in law (QS World University Rankings), and our researchers are at the forefront of international scholarship in fields as diverse as human rights law, climate change, telecommunications, medical research and quantum computing. The University is known for its research excellence and impact, underpinned by a comprehensive discipline base, and affirmed via high ratings in the Excellence in Research for Australia quality assessment exercise. It currently has the highest number of highly cited (HiCi) authors of any Australian university at 20; and with over 100 research centres and institutes, experts from across the University are brought together and connected with thought leaders around the world to tackle society’s complex problems in innovative ways. The University has acted as the point of nucleation for a remarkable array of associated medical research institutes and hospitals. Together, these form one of the world’s premier sites for biomedical research––the Parkville Precinct. The sheer quantity of life-sciences research facilities, institutes, researchers, fellows and postgraduate students in the Parkville Precinct and surrounds, and the comprehensive breadth of bioscience disciplines, is without parallel in the southern hemisphere and one of the very few such concentrations of research excellence worldwide. The University is also developing Australia’s leading innovation precinct for industry, researchers, government and the community to collaborate on innovative solutions to major societal challenges, particularly in relation to changing technologies, sustainability and resilience.
