One of Australia’s original tertiary institutions, RMIT University enjoys an international reputation for excellence in professional and vocational education, applied research, and engagement with the needs of industry and the community. The institution was established in 1887 as the Working Men’s College, with the aim of bringing education to the working people of Melbourne. It was awarded royal patronage by Queen Elizabeth II in 1954, with the right to use the prefix “Royal.” RMIT obtained university status in 1992 by an Act of the Australian State Parliament of Victoria. The university has three campuses in Melbourne, two campuses in Vietnam and a research and industry collaboration center in Spain. RMIT also offers educational programs through partners in Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. It is now Australia’s largest tertiary education provider with more than 84,000 students. The 2019 QS World University Rankings places RMIT 21st in the Top 50 Under 50 years old university list. The 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject list places RMIT in the top 100 universities worldwide in accounting and finance, architecture and the built environment, art and design, business and management studies, civil and structural engineering, communications and media studies, computer science and information systems, development studies, education, and electrical and electronic engineering.
